This is what’s taking over 2018 autumn street styles, retail chains and magazine spreads, all courtesy of designers like Prabal Gurung, Michael Kors, Christopher Kane or Rebecca Minkoff‘s collections we fell so head over heels with at Fashion Week.

Each season, the fashion world stands at attention to see what Marc will do next. For spring, he showed military-inspired looks in a rosy setting that evoked an American fantasy—be it Oz or a Levittown. While tailored army kit was clearly one of Jacobs’s touchstones, the subtle twists and embellishments he added showed the designer taking leave of tradition and marching, as always, to the beat of his own drum.

1. KARL LAGERFELD Lace-up wool-blend coat – Karl Lagerfeld’s coat has a loose, boy-borrowed shape that can be cinched by lace-up ties at the back – swap them for your own silk or embroidered ribbons for a personalized spin. It’s tailored from wool-blend and has circular embellishments through the front to mimic the look of double-breasted styles. The smooth lining ensures it’s easy to layer over chunky knits and sweaters.

2 .DOLCE & GABBANA Metallic-trimmed wool-blend crepe coat – Echoing the jackets of royal guards, Dolce & Gabbana’s coat has a fit-and-flare silhouette and exaggerated collar that is accentuated with glittering gold ribbon. This wool-blend crepe piece fastens at the front with ornate medallion snaps embossed with crests. We love the surprise of the leopard-print satin lining.

3.BURBERRY Wool-felt coat – Burberry’s military-inspired coat is cut from soft wool-felt and detailed with gold crested buttons. It’s tailored for a slightly loose fit and lined in twill so will easily layer over knits. We love how it looks worn over a slip dress.

4.SAINT LAURENT Caban grosgrain-trimmed wool coat – Saint Laurent’s sophisticated take on caban officer styles, this wool coat has been crafted in Italy from thick black wool. It is double-breasted with eight embossed buttons, has just one shoulder loop and is finished with ‘pessementerie’ grosgrain ribbon at the cuffs. Military outerwear never dates, especially when it’s designed as beautifully as this.

5.MIRA MIKATI Scout Patch embellished wool-blend gabardine coat – Mira Mikati’s Fall ’17 collection is inspired by the Boy Scouts – the Paris Fashion Week presentation was set up like a summer camp with tents, sleeping bags and a faux fire pit. Made from navy wool-blend gabardine, this coat is cut in a double-breasted shape and punctuated with playful pins, patches and badges. Though it references smart military outerwear, relaxed styling works best – unfastened over a loose shirt and jeans.

6.PIERRE BALMAIN Satin-trimmed wool coat – Pierre Balmain’s coat is beautifully tailored from wool that’s lofty enough to hold the brand’s signature sharp shoulders. Complete with lustrous satin lapels, it has an open front that’s cinched with two logo-stamped buttons. Wear yours with cropped pants, or to sharpen washed denim.
