A new survey shows that 46% of the British people think that Prince Charles should step down and let his eldest son, Prince William, become the next king when the time comes. The poll done by BMG Research on behalf of The Independent states that almost half of the population thinks that Charles should abdicate immediately so that his son can take the throne.
The survey also shows that only 20% of the people think that Charles’ wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, should take the title of the queen alongside him. Prince Charles, 70, is the longest-serving heir apparent in British history.
Even though so many people are hoping that he will step down in favor of William, this seems very unlikely to happen. In his speech for his 70th birthday, the Prince of Wales talked about how he will try to stay “non-party political,” and added that “there’s only room for one sovereign at a time.”
Charles has received much criticism through his life on various issues, but he has said that he is not apologizing for what has been called “meddling.”
“I always wonder what ‘meddling’ is… I always thought it was motivating,” he said. “But I’ve always been intrigued if it’s meddling to worry about the inner cities as I did 40 years ago and what was happening or not happening there; the conditions in which people were living,” Charles insisted. “If that’s meddling, I’m very proud of it.”
