Did you know that Kate Middleton, before she became Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, took etiquette classes on how to behave and act like royalty? The same goes for Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex. The former commoners had to learn how to sit, get out of a car, hold a teacup properly, and of course curtsey, before walking down the aisle with their very own Princes Charming.
While Kate was the first one, to have the famous way of sitting, called “the Duchess Slant, but it was Princess Diana who actually invented. Now as being the royal family’s newest member, Meghan Markle added her own personal touch to it.
Beaumont Etiquette founder Myka Meierthe clarifies that slant is used “when a lady has to sit for an extended amount of time while keeping poise and posture.” She told People magazine that it’s the perfect pose “for when a camera is shooting directly in front of you.” By “slightly slanting the knees to create a zig-zag effect when wearing a dress or skirt,” the camera can only shoot the side of your legs and “protect your modesty.”
