Over the years the idea of the British Royal family has changed many times, with them having a lot of ups and downs. Today they are not only an attraction for people from all over the world and for people in Britain, but they are simply idolised and worshiped by millions. In 2011, almost 23 million Americans woke up early to watch the wedding of Prince William and back in 1981, before cable TV, the wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most-watched televised events of the 1980s in the United States.
“For the first time, in front of a mass global television audience was the idea of a fairytale princess wedding: Someone who was one of us marrying into the royal family. Everyone could relate to that around the world,” Sandro Monetti, a British journalist said. When Diana, Princess of Wales, died in 1997, about 30 million Americans watched the funeral.
In nowadays, whether is royal babies, royal tours, royal engagements and weddings or just about any other day that members of the royal family step out, they continue to dominate the headlines.
Especially popular is the younger generation of the royal family, especially recently with the birth of Prince Louis in April this year and the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan a month later. Now a recent poll done by YouGov reveals the most popular members of the royal family among the public.
On top of the list leading is Prince Harry, who is prefered by 77% of the people who polled. His wife follows him but with only 55 % of those polled saying that they have a positive view of her.
Kate Middleton and Prince William are also placed higher on the list than Meghan. The Duke of Edinburgh is fifth and the Queen is placed second favourite. Prince Charles falls just behind Meghan, with 48%.
In a documentary that was aired on BBC 1 Prince Charles talked about how he will deal with governmental matters when he becomes king. “You know, I’ve tried to make sure whatever I’ve done has been non-party political, and I think it’s vital to remember there’s only room for one sovereign at a time, not two,” he said. “So you can’t be the same as the sovereign if you’re the Prince of Wales or the heir.”
